The Petroleum University of Technology was established in 1939 in Abadan, Iran under the name Abadan Institute of Technology. This university has a faculty in Tehran, Iran.

The Petroleum University of Technology was established in 1939 in Abadan, Iran under the name Abadan Institute of Technology.(AIT) PUT is teaching graduate and post-graduate students, and is collaborating with other universities in Iran and abroad to make this possible.

PUT has sent some post-graduate students to foreign countries and is co-operating with some of the native universities to start majors for upstream professions in oil industry. Beside the educational activities, PUT enjoys the most advanced research possibilities. Being in close relation with Iranian oil industry as well as research centers in other countries, PUT has optimized the capacities of its students and improved their skills.

Maintaining great resources of oil and gas in the country and educating the expert man-power for the development and optimum exploitation of these resources are among the priorities and strategic goals that the Ministry of Oil pursues. To achieve this goal, it is the task of PUT to educate as many B.S., M.S. and Ph.Ds as are required. PUT is an ideal school for training graduate and post-graduate students, and is in collaboration with other universities in Iran and abroad.

PUT has sent some post-graduate students to foreign countries and is cooprating with some of domestic universities inside the country to begin majors for upper-hand professions in oil industry. Beside the educational activities, PUT enjoys the most advanced research possibilities. Being in close contact with Iranian oil industry and also research centers in other countries, PUT has optimized the capacities of its students.

This university, having a space of 370,000 m2 and more than 70 faculty members, has worked extensively to educate specialists who can satisfy the needs of oil industry. Through its 3 faculties in Ahvaz, Abadan and Tehran, PUT admits graduate and post-graduate students in fields related to upstream professions in oil industry. All the specialized courses are offered in English.

The upstream majors and other related fields in this university are as follows:

Exploitation Engineering Reservoir Engineering Drilling Engineering Exploration Engineering Safety and Technical Inspection Engineering Safety and Technical maintenance Engineering Instrumentation Engineering Energy Economy (oil Economy Management) Also, PUT has been implementing the following projects to educate the required man-power:

Oil Engineering Ph-D project, jointly with Sharif Industrial University and PUT Research Center. Double major project (B.S.). Dual Degree project (B.S.), jointly with IFP University (France), Curtin University (Australia), and Calgary University (Canada). Graduate Courses in marine sciences, jointly with New Castle University, England. MBA project for post-graduate students. Number of Students in the 2nd term of Academic Year 2004-2005 Number of graduate student 1132 Number of post-graduate students 72 Number of post-graduate students in Dual Degree projects 177 Number of graduate students in Double major project --- Number of students in Joint Ph.D --- Number of M.A students studying abroad 61 Number of Ph.D students studying abroad 55

In recent years there is a growing trend at PUT towards admitting distinguished candidates by providing them with special facilities to enable the students to study in upstream engineering to hold the vacant posts in gas and oil industry. Also due to expanding gas and oil fields and enhancing recovery (and thus developing private sectors in these projects), at least 2000 engineers with Post-graduate degree and 150 in Ph.D degree are needed up to the end of fourth plan, and this is a promising future for those who are interested in progressing and developing Islamic Republic of Iran.

Brief history of PUT

Higher levels of education within Iran"s oil industry began officially in 1318 (1939) with the establishment of Abadan Technical School.

This school offered combined education and training. The students who were admitted and employed as staff members, studied at the school for 2/5 of their time and for the rest received practical training at Abadan Refinery. Thus, after a year of preliminary education and 4 years of studying-training, they would become technicians in oil chemistry, refining engineers, mechanic engineers and electrical engineers. Normally they would be in charge of different positions at Abadan Refinery.

In 1956, as a result of contemporary changes in the educational system of oil industry, the name of the school changed to Abadan Technical College. The curriculum focused on general engineering courses, and the students from the 4th grade of high school were admitted to the college after an entrance exam and interview. The college worked in this way up to 1961.

In 1962, once again as a result of changes in educational programs, the college changed its name to Abadan Institute of Technology (AIT).

A new curriculum was run for the field of Oil Engineering (majoring in Refining, Exploration, and mining) and also for Business and Administration (majoring in management and Accounting). In this period also the educational programs included simultaneous training. (the students received 3 years of study and a year of training in different units of oil industry). Upon receiving their B.S. degrees, the graduates were generally employed by the industry.

Between 1966-1980 some new fields of study were included into, or removed from, the curriculum according to the needs of the industry.

With the start of the Imposed war it was no longer possible for the Institute to remain in Abadan. At first it was transferred to Gachsaran in 1981, and after the re-opening of the universities, in 1983, it was transferred to its present location in Ahvaz.

Petroleum University of Technology (PUT) was instituted with the permission of the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education in 1989, and it was able to preside over all the educational units with in the Ministry of Oil and establish new once to fulfil the goals of oil industry. Among these new institution one way refer to Shahid Tondgooyan Collage of Chemical and Petrochemical Engineering (established in 1991 in the previous place of Abadan Institute of Technology) and PUT Research Center (established in 1992 in Ahvaz).

At present, PUT Consists of 3 faculties, one educational complex and 2 research centers.

These are:

Tehran Petroleum College Ahwaz Petroleum College Abadan Petroleum College Mahmoodabad Nautical College Tehran Oil Research Center Ahvaz Oil Research Center What the graduates of this university have done after the nationalization of oil industry is one of the golden pages in the history of Iran. The experts from Abadan Institute of Technology successfully reconstructed and managed the different parts of Abadan Refinery and amazed the whole world - and this in spite of some foreigners who had claimed that Iranians were not able to refine even drinking water!

After the victory of the glorious Islamic Revolution and the succeeding sanctions, again graduates of this university played a very important role in severing our ties with hostile countries.

Educational Activities of P.U.T

P.U.T with heavy investment for educational affairs and using of best facilities, have prepared an adequate space for students to progress at high scientific levels.

To achieve this aim, P.U.T tries to raise the quality of education via designing and fulfilling of different programs (including undergraduate and graduate programs).

P.U.T is committed to creating the best facilities for research and education. P.U.T hopes this causes innovative thinking and creativity.

Students Background

According to the results of MS Entrance Examinations in Petroleum Engineering PUT students are the best among other universities like Sharif University of Technology and Amirkabir University of Technology. The university has sent some of its distinguished students to University of Calgary, Curtin University of Technology and Institute Francaise du petrole (IFP) in France.
